Remember when Starbucks made matcha lemonade a big thing earlier this summer? Well it got me thinking about other ways I could enjoy matcha during the hot summer months (because, let’s be honest, a steaming hot full-fat matcha latte is not very appetizing in the muggly heat that is August) and my mind immediately wandered to alcohol. A matcha gin and tonic? No, too simple. A matcha mojito? Already overdone. And then the light bulb went off – what about in sangria? I did a quick search on my blog to find that I’ve never done a sangria recipe (which is absurd because it’s always been a drink of choice between my mother and I ever since I was old enough to drink).

Yes, sangria – the ultimate summer punch. The ideal day drinking companion. Perfect. And not just any sangria – let’s make it color coordinated with frozen green grapes and juicy cucumbers all while maintaining that citrusy matcha flavor that Starbucks made mainstream.

I used a sweet white wine in this recipe to balance the earthy matcha powder. You could also add a few tablespoons of sugar if you like your sangria on the sweeter side but I personally prefer mine to only have a hint of sweet. Another thing I did was freeze the grapes ahead of time so they doubled as ice cubes. Most of this recipe can be prepped a few hours ahead of serving and then just topped with ice and the sparkling water right before your guests arrive. The matcha portion does settle a little at the bottom so just give it a good stir before serving it into individual cups.

Last thing I wanted to mention is that the only liquor in this sangria is wine (so I guess it’s almost like a spritzer?) as I didn’t want anything too intense. You are more than welcome to add a splash of brandy, apple liquor, or vodka if you’d like an extra boozy kick.

Green Matcha Sangria

This Green Matcha Sangria recipe is a perfect mix between earthy matcha and sweet white wine.

    cup
    water
  • 2
    Tbsp
    organic Matcha powder
  • 2
    limes
    sliced
  • Juice from 1 lime
    (so 3 limes total)
  • 1
    bunch of green grapes
    frozen
  • 2
    green apples
    sliced
  • 1
    cucumber
    sliced
  • 1
    bunch of mint
  • 1
    bottle of white wine
  • 1
    liter
    sparkling soda
  1. Bring the water to a boil in a tea kettle or small saucepan over the stove. Place the matcha in a heat safe bowl and slowly pour the water in, one tablespoon at a time, while whisking the matcha so that it dissolved.

  2. Transfer matcha mixture to a large pitcher and ass in the lime juice, lime slices, grapes, apple slices, cucumber slices, and half the mint.

  3. Pour water wine into the pitcher and transfer to the fridge until ready to serve.

  4. Right before serving, add a handful of ice and the sparkling soda.

  5. Use the remaining mint to garnish glasses when serving.
